The well-represented Aztec fans stormed the floor at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas after SDSU won back-to-back Mountain West Conference tournament titles. The Aztec faithful wasted no time celebrating with their team on the court as they impatiently hopped over the floor walls and joined in the “I Believe That We Will Win” chant, which resonated all throughout the arena. BYU fans, who certainly outnumbered those of SDSU during the game, sat in the stands in dismay as the Aztecs knocked off eighth-ranked BYU for the first time in three meetings this season.
After the game, senior guard DJ Gay told me this victory ranked in his top three over his illustrious SDSU career. When I told senior forward Billy White — who had a team-high 21 points and a game-high 12 rebounds and 5 steals — SDSU is 5-0 this season when he scores 20-plus points, White’s eyes lit up. Head coach Steve Fisher was so enamored with the tournament championship that he couldn’t remember if the latest one was the program’s third or fourth title during his 12-year tenure on Montezuma Mesa. For the record, it’s their fourth.
The Aztecs earned a two-seed in the NCAA Tournament and will face Northern Colorado in Tucson, AZ this Thursday at 1:40 PST.
Check back here shortly for my postgame interviews with Fisher and some of his players. Until then, Go Aztecs!
